Effective Management and Good Leadership are not the same. Although they work in harmony and they need each other in order for both of them to be effective, there are clear differences between the two. Lets look at what constitutes good leadership.
In the workplace, it may be that everyone is doing their job very well, but the overall outcome is not what’s envisioned. The result? The common goal is not attained. In this case, action is needed. It is natural for a lot of people to stay in line and follow the leader’s orders, whatever they might be. There are those, however, that don’t blindly follow instructions. They do things with the good of the majority in mind. They may very well take on leadership functions.
Good leaders do possess some inborn traits, but these are not the only necessary requisites. Practical experience, regular practice, and a good dose of determination are required so as to develop other leadership skills.
A leader is a person who is able to influence people into doing tasks and achieving goals and objectives. An excellent leader can create cohesion in his team so that every person works toward the good of the group. Being a leader does not mean obtaining power and abusing it. It’s not at all about causing people to act under fear. It comes down to making team members feel they hold a vital position within the team, and letting them see that the picture is not complete without their presence.
A great leader is someone who is able to get his people to follow his plans. In order to do this, one should establish clear targets. If one doesn’t have idea where he is going to, people are not going to follow the expected path. It is also necessary for a great leader to have a correct overview of the company. Each organization has a vision, objectives, and operational processes. Businesses have hierarchies and the various individuals in the organization could be addressed to in several situations. A good leader should have familiarity with these matters.
Leadership is a matter of reflection. The way in which one is and the things one knows and does are shown in the subordinates’ attitudes. Effective leadership also exhibits self-confident subordinates. People that have trust in their leader are prepared to accept challenges, regardless of what they are, just to achieve the results that must be achieved. However before a leader can acquire the trust of his subordinates, he has to build a good relationship with them and be a good role model.
After establishing a good relationship with his subordinates, an effective leader can start sharing his objectives to them because they will be more willing to put their trust in him. A great leader is someone who can clearly communicate to subordinates what his objectives are and what he needs from his people. Similarly, a leader should demonstrate good judgment. Each time it’s necessary, it’s crucial for a leader to carefully review a situation so he can develop the most effective solution. An excellent leader must be able to see and exploit any skills that workers may have. A great leader is able to use his employees’ natural talents to create a more cohesive group.
Becoming a leader and acquiring the skills that will make you a good leader aren’t things you can do in a single day. It requires time and lots of work. What’s more important, leadership isn’t solely centered on the individual who is leading. It also involves getting others to cooperate. Because without followers, there wouldn’t be leaders.
